Chiesa di San Bernardino

Stradone Antonio Provolo, 28 , Verona - 37123

The construction of the conventual buildings group of San Bernardino was started two years after Sienese saint's canonization, in 1452, on firm request of the people of Verona.

The conventual group hardly survived to the spoliations and the su.ppressions of the 19th century.
During the ruling of the French, the Austrians and the Kingdome of Italy, the convent was used as hospital, city cemetery,  warehouse and boarding-school.

The location for the foundation of the church and the annexed convent was chosen by San Giovanni da Capestrano, San Bernardino da Siena's fellow friend, after this latter's canonization in 1450. San Bernardino  champion of the movimento dell'Osservanza, inside of the Franciscan Order and famous preacher who was in Verona in 1422 and 1443.

By his preaching he spread the veneration of Gesus' name shown on the monogram IHS (Iesus Hominum Salvator), surrounded by a 12 rays sun (the 12 apostles).

The conventual block includes four cloisters. The major one ( Saint Antony's cloister, from the lunette's images ), is the churchyard. The church, completely built with bricks, for its sobriety and structural simplicity is a tipical architectural building of the mendicants Orders.
