San Zeno

Chiesa di San Zeno

Via Mezzavilla, 1 , Illasi (VR) - 37031

The building was constructed between 1878 and 1880 based on a project by Angelo Gottardi. It was consecrated in 1883, the year in which the main altar from the close abbey was placed.

In 1907, it was decorated by the painter Vincenzo Carton. In 1989, the new floor was laid while the recent restoration of the façade decorated with a rose window and two lateral biforas took place.

In the church, important works of art are preserved such as the Gruppo del Calvario (14th century), of which two statues of women are copies of works currently housed in the Civic Museum of Castelvecchio in Verona, or the Cristo known as Moro because a black patina covered it until a restoration revealed the underlying flesh color and is dated to the 15th century, and another wooden statue of San Zeno from the 17th century.

The original altar was removed in 1918 when the current one, from the now-defunct church of San Sebastiano in Verona (of which only the bell tower remains), was installed. This altar was designed by Andrea Pozzo in Baroque style and features a statue of San Sebastiano by the sculptor Orazio Marinali.
