Palazzo dei Capitani

The Palace, standing on Roman and Romanesque ruins, was built by the Scaliger between the 12th and the 14th centuries. After being reduced to mere walls, perhaps because of an earthquake or of a fire, it became the property of Francesco Mercanti of Verona and was inherited by his descendents. Dating from 1477, show the building already rebuilt in Venetian style and richly decorated. In 1618 Verona, invited to do so by the Serenissima Republic of Venice, bought the palace to make it the residence of the Capitan of the Lake.

In 1902 it was declared to be a National Monument.

The Captain’s Palace is located in via Capitanato, next to the port of Malcesine. Only the ground floor and the garden are open to the public. The first floor is open only during concerts, conferences or wedding ceremonies. It is open every day and admission is free of charge.
