Duomo di Santa Maria

Piazzetta Don Gaetano Danieli 5, , Montecchia di Crosara (VR) - 37030

Its origins date back to the VII - VIII century when the rural parish of Montecchia emerged, during the height of the Christianization process of the territory.

In the XIII century, the church was the seat of the parish, and it oversaw a vast surrounding area that included the parishes of Gambellara, Montebello and Montorso.

Due to its small size, it was demolished to build a larger church, designed by Don Gaetano Danieli and executed by Paolo Uderzo and engineer De Boni; it was opened to the public in 1885.

The style of the building is Renaissance, with a Romanesque bell tower from the XII century built with stone bricks.

The interior, spacious and majestic, is richly decorated: the church is adorned with precious frescoes by Rocco Pitacco and houses an altar of Santa Lucia dating back to the XVII century. Among the details, the most important are Madonna in trono con Bambino in white limestone from the XV century, likely a remnant from the ancient church, the main altar with two angels (by architect Luigi Toniato), and the altar of Madonna, formerly the main altar of the ancient church (1729).
