The building, passionately and sacrificially restored by the local theater group ''Filodrammatici'', is an ancient church, the former oratory of the Holy Spirit, once the seat of the local confraternity; its facade was exactly opposite to that of the church of St. Francis (so that the audience of the current theater is presumably located in the part previously occupied by the transept).
The Estense historian Nuvolato does not speak to us about the precise origins of the construction (1692); he only tells us that in 1771, by decree of the Magnificent Community of Este, the School of the Holy Spirit was transferred to the nearby church of Santa Maria delle Consolazioni (the Zoccoli).
Desecrated, the former church has since had numerous uses. The most important, between the 19th and 20th centuries, was to host the Civic Musical Institute "Giuseppe Farinelli" (this is why the alley leading to the building was named Calle della Musica).
