Convento di San Francesco

The Franciscan friars, at the beginning of the fifteenth century, built their convent within the walls of Conegliano. The building, in the following centuries, was enlarged several times, to include two cloisters and a church. Following the Napoleonic laws of 1806, the convent and the church became state property and were used as barracks and hospital. The church and one of the cloisters were demolished in 1812. From 1858 to 1870, perhaps at the request of the Municipality of Conegliano, the complex was transformed into a hospital and from 1871 part of it was used as a shelter and then as a barracks. Finally, from 1894 it was intended to house schools (elementary and middle school), a function that it will maintain until the restoration, begun on the occasion of the Jubilee of 2000. Of the conventual complex now remains the main cloister with elegant arches.
