On a turbulent night in 1792, a lightning bolt "wounded it in its soul," striking the bell tower, which partially collapsed onto the side aisle. The event was devastating as it shattered all the stained glass windows, including those of the nearby shops.
The population, already exhausted by the excessive taxes, could not help the then parish priest of Crespino Mons. Zagatti, and thus the reconstruction of the demolished aisle lasted for 75 years.
The design of the church was drawn up by the architect Angelo Santini, who also oversaw the construction work.
