Forte Ardietti

Località Mano di Ferro , Ponti sul Mincio - 46040

Fort Aldrietti was built following the events of the First Italian War of Independence (1848-49) that saw the city fall into the hands of the Sardinian-Piedmontese forces.

It has maintained its almost entirely original structure for 160 years. It had a garrison of 612 men and 25 cannons of various calibres.

The fort remained Austrian until 1866 when, following the Third War of Independence, it passed to the Kingdom of Italy.

It remained a real fortress until 1918, after which it was used as an ammunition depot until 1998, when it passed to the Civil State. A number of artillery pieces dating from the 1500s to the Korean War (1948-1953) are preserved inside.
