The 'La Bastia' Archaeopark on Mount San Michele (336 metres above sea level) overlooking Cavaion, established in May 2014, is one of the most interesting archaeological sites in the lake area. It contains the remains of a cult building datable to around the 11th century; however, the discovery, during the last excavation campaign, of some decorated limestone fragments from the 9th century suggests an earlier origin. The Archaeological Park has been extended and modified several times, and there is a military stronghold of strategic importance for the surrounding area. Archaeological excavations were conducted continuously from 2003 to 2011 by the Veneto Region's Superintendency for Archaeological Heritage, thanks to a research and enhancement project promoted by the municipality and supported by the Veneto Region. Initially, the lower terrace was investigated, where the highest ridges of the church and other annexed structures emerged. Subsequently, the investigations interested the upper terrace, initially occupied by dense vegetation. Since the first campaigns, the walls have been the subject of consolidation and restoration, activities that continued until 2012. In 2012 and 2013, the redevelopment of the site for its use took place.
