In front of Palazzo Maffei, at the end of Piazza delle Erbe, there is the marble column with the Lion of St. Mark, with an open gospel citing the inscription "Pax" and the low tail.
The statue of the Marcian Lion, symbolically representing the evangelist St. Mark in the form of a winged lion, made in 1523, recalls the victory of Venice and the dominion over the city.
