Guided tour of the fourteenth-century frescoes of the Palazzo della Ragione, the Cathedral Baptistery and the Carrarese Palace, monuments of Padua Urbs Picta now a Unesco World Heritage Site.
Their frescoed walls represent the great development of Padua painting, which expressed a completely new way of representing the narrative in painting with new spatial perspectives influenced by scientific advances in optics together with the ability to paint the human figure with natural realism, allowing it to express feelings and emotions which are part of our human nature. These cycles of frescoes represent a unique ensemble which, for the quantity of frescoed walls and for the aesthetic quality, are unparalleled in the history of art.
The walk will lead to the discovery of the Dolce Vita at the time of the Carraresi, Lords of Padua in the 14th century.
Entering the current seat of the Accademia Galileiana di Scienze, Lettere e Arti (Galilean Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts) we will visit the Chapel of the Reggia Carrarese, the former Royal Palace with its frescoes painted by Guariento before 1354.
We will then continue with a visit to the Cathedral Baptistery, chosen by Fina Buzzaccarini as her family's burial place.
Finally, a visit to the Palazzo della Ragione, revealing the background of its many functions over six centuries and recounting the arts, crafts and workshops described in the world's largest astrological cycle frescoed along the walls.
