During archaeological excavations in the castle were discovered several finds which today are preserved in the Cortino di Fratta, now home of the Literary Museum dedicated to Ippolito Nievo and multipurpose cultural centre.
The first news attesting to the existence of a fortified structure in Fratta dates back to 1186.
The archaeological excavations and the environmental project of the site around the castle which was recently purchased by the Municipality has been financed by the European Community, the Veneto Region, the Province of Venice and the Municipality of Fossalta.
The restoration has seen the creation in the castle of a green park, an arena, and the Garden of Marte and Flora which hosts old arboreal and floral species present in the area in medieval times.
Next to the archaeological remains of the castle you will also find a restored 15th-century house, once part of the castle annexes, and it will soon house a Cultural Centre and Museum. In the new exhibition rooms, visitors will be able to admire the numerous finds discovered during archaeological research and the extensive collection of books, documents and memorabilia that belonged to the writer Ippolito Nievo, who set his famous novel Le Confessioni di un Italiano here.
