The Masiere di Vedana are an enormous and chaotic accumulation of rock blocks that originated from an ancient landslide, initially falling onto the ancient Cordevole glacier and then "scattered" by the slow flow of the glaciers, which once occupied what are now quiet fields populated by foxes and badgers, woodpeckers and owls.
The trail starts from the locality of San Gottardo, inhabited since ancient times by monks, where the traces of the ancient village remain.
DETAILS and STORIES:
An endless stony wasteland, barren and arid, laboriously colonized by sparse and stunted vegetation. It’s the tormented landscape of the Masiere di Vedana, a suggestive and enigmatic microcosm located at the edge of the park, near the Certosa di Vedana. Numerous legends surround the origin of the Masiere (as often happens with the mysterious phenomena of nature). The formation of this impressive accumulation of large blocks is nevertheless connected to a series of major landslides that occurred from Mount Peron towards the end of the last ice age (about 15,000 years ago), when the terminal part (front) of the Cordevole glacier was stationed in the Mas-Peron basin, now completely disconnected from the Piave glacier. It is therefore a large accumulation of “glacial boulders,” that is, landslide materials gently scattered by a glacier tongue in the process of melting. A singular “wet oasis,” lost in this arid stony desert, is the morainic pond of Vedana, fed by underground water veins and nestled in a small basin, along the direction of an ancient abandoned valley of the T.Cordevole.
