The Church of Santissimo Redentore is the center of one of the most heartfelt and important popular festivals in Venice, the Redeemer, which is celebrated on the third Sunday of July. It was built in 1577 on the initiative of the Senate of the Republic in order to honor a vow made during the terrible plague that had occurred a couple of years earlier.
The Church, which represents one of the greatest architectural masterpieces of the Renaissance, was commissioned to Andrea Palladio, who died before seeing it completed, and was finished by Antonio da Ponte, who faithfully respected Palladio's project.
The interior of the Church is full of works by great artists, among which on the counter-facade is a beautiful lunette by Pietro Vecchia depicting “La Vergine presenta a Gesù il Beato Felice da Cantalice“. The large hall and the presbytery preserve notable works by Paolo Veronese (and assistants), Jacopo Tintoretto, Francesco Bassano, Paolo Piazza and Jacopo Palma il Giovane.
