Isola Nova del Tronchetto, 21 , Venezia - 30135

The Mint, 1537 – 1547

The building was designed by Jacopo Sansovino as part of the  urbanrestructuring of the square ordered by doge Andrea Gritti.

Massive and austere in form, it has an Istrian stone façade and was originally planned to be two storeys high. The building is structured around a rectangular courtyard overlooked by warehouses and workshops.

The coins of the Venetian Republic were minted here, and this activity continued until 1870.

Today the Mint is home to the reading rooms of the Marciana National Library.

The restoration of the informational totems in the Piazza San Marco area has been supported by the project “Venice and its Lagoon: Managing and Enhancing Tourist Flows” funded by the Italian Ministry of Tourism.
