Designed by Jacopo Sansovino, it was erected by order of the Procurators of Saint Mark in order to house the Greek and Latin codices that were donated to Venice by Cardinal Bessarione in the year 1468. The works were not completed at the time of Sansovino's death.
The wing facing the quay was completed by Vincenzo Scamozzi between 1583 and 1588.
Today these rooms are part of the Marciana National Library. The visit to the Monumental Rooms of this site is included in the combined “I Musei di Piazza San Marco” ticket, with entrance from the Correr Museum: www.correr.visitmuve.it
