Porta San Giorgio immediately appears as a fortification. This is suggested by the setting with three large arches of equal dimensions, the linear simplicity of the architecture, the frugality of the external facade, whose only frieze is the presence of the coats of arms of the successive superintendents.
There are also rooms for the military and customs guards, as well as a terrace on which there was a station for shooting and a bomb-proof cover.
The door responds to the desire of Doge Andrea Gritti (1525-1526) to combine military austerity with aesthetic need, which is reflected in the covering of the structure with precious materials that express the richness, strength and nobility of the State.
It remained incomplete until 1835 when, with the opportunity of creating a new internal elevation, work was carried out that was completed in 1840, under Austrian rule.
Recent restorations have brought to light the ancient splendour of the door.
