Escursione Grotte del Caglieron-Castello di Piai
Via Marconi, 6 , Fregona - 31010
Leaving the car in the parking lot near the Caglieron Caves, take the trail east of the bridge (signpost 1037a) that, climbing up, winds into the woods until it intersects with a dirt road leading to the ruins of the Castle of Piai. Continuing along this road, keeping to the right, you will reach the archaeological site. Located in a strategic position at the top of Mount Castello that overlooks the village of Piai and founded in the 12th century, the castle was an important medieval fortification of the powerful Da Camino family. Its role was related to controlling the transit of goods coming from the plain and heading towards the Belluno area. From the castle, retrace the path back to a fork where you continue to the right for about a hundred meters until you enter Via Borgo Ciser, which leads to the village of Sonego. After crossing the bridge over the Carron stream, keep to the right and descend until reaching the intersection at Piai, where you take Via Grotte del Caglieron back to the starting point. The route is 3.5 km long and takes about an hour.
