La torre di Bardolino

The Tower of Bardolino

P.ta San Gervaso, 1 , Bardolino - 37011

Unfortunately, very little remains of Bardolino Castle today. It is thought that towards the end of the 9th century, King Berengar, unable to repel the Hungarians, allowed fortresses and forts to be built to defend the villages on Lake Garda. With the Scaligeri, the castle was rebuilt and enlarged in its organic form. With the Scaligeri, the castle was enlarged to form a single fortress for the entire town, when it took on the shape still visible today in the tower, gates and street layout. Today, the two gates of Bardolino Castle, located to the north (Porta San Giovanni) and south (Porta Verona) of the town, remain visible; also visible are the remains of the walls and one of the defensive towers of the enclosure, located near the port and very striking due to the steep slope on the left side due to a natural subsidence of the land.
