The origins of the Rodigo city walls are not entirely clear. It is certainly known that they were completed in the early decades of the 14th century. The city wall, in a pentagonal shape, had three turreted gates:
- S. Giovanni (demolished in 1853),
- S. Bartolomeo and Arquà (demolished in 1845);
- plus a pedestrian gate near the castle, the so-called Portello (demolished in 1851).
Today, the original city walls have:
- Torre Pighin
- Porta S. Bartolomeo
- Porta S. Agostino and some parts incorporated and/or hidden by new constructions.
Route
It is possible to reconstruct a route where remnants of the city walls can be glimpsed:
Starting from the Castle, crossing Corso del Popolo (formerly Adigetto), proceed on via Mure S. Giuseppe; at the end of this street, to the left, enter V.le Trieste; continuing right until Vico Longhena, you enter p.zza XX settembre (Rotonda).
Continue left until via Bortoloni, from which you can access via Boscolo towards p.zza Merlin (Porta S. Bartolomeo), then proceed along via Ponte della Roda, via Pighin, via Mure dell’Ospedale, until you take via Badaloni where turning right gives access to via del Sacro Cuore, which you follow until Piazza Tien An Men, from where, along via Grimani, you return to the Castle.
