The San Marco Park is a beautiful site, partially hilly and located just a few hundred meters from the center of Gambellara. Here, there is a unique geological heritage that must certainly be preserved, consisting of an exceptional outcrop of columnar basalts in the shape of hexagonal prisms. In the past, it was an old quarry called Cava "San Marco," named after the homonymous hill, where rock was extracted in the 1950s for the construction of railway embankments. In the 1990s, the quarry was reclaimed and a natural park was created with an open-air amphitheater to host cultural activities. Fortunately, the reclamation and environmental recovery project took into account leaving a short stretch of the basalt deposit intact in order to document the site’s very important geology.
