Chiesa di San Giorgio (Sorio)
Via San Giorgio 10 , Gambellara - 36053
Rebuilt in 1530, it was restored in 1645, 1736, and in 1964-65. At the main altar, dating back to the 18th century, there is a notable canvas attributed to Montagna (circa 1450-1523); other works are from the school of Carpioni. The 14th-century bell tower, poorly restored, preserves within a niche an ancient statue of the Madonna. Some signs indicate the Romanesque origin of the Church of San Giorgio (some stone statues and especially the wonderful recently restored Romanesque bell tower). In February 1525 it was "reconsecrated" after a substantial renovation according to the lines of Renaissance architecture. From 1665 to 1711, the apse and the main altar were demolished and rebuilt with Baroque touches to the various structures. Finally, in 1964, a nave was added to create space for celebrations.
