Duomo San Clemente

Duomo di San Clemente

Corso Italia, 1 , Valdagno - 36078

The Cathedral of San Clemente was erected in the 18th century based on designs by architects Giovanni Miazzi from Bassano and Luigi De Boni from Feltre. The Church was opened to the public in 1748 and consecrated in the following years. The single nave features articulations that house six chapels, and the walls are covered with as many as 41 19th-century paintings, almost all of which are the work of Lorenzo Rizzi from Udine. In the sacristy, one can admire the remarkable stone altarpiece of extraordinary dimensions. This valuable work, belonging to the previous demolished church, holds historical interest as it is a rare carved stone altarpiece. The artifact bears the inscription "opus Hjeronimis" and the date 1445, displaying typical stylistic features of the Vicenza school of the late 15th century. The organ was built by the firm Balbiani-Veggezzi-Bossi in 1942 and consists of 2 manuals with a pedalboard, made up of 34 registers, of which 26 are for the manuals and 8 for the pedalboard; it was restored by Francesco Paccagnella from Padua in 2001. A short distance from the sacred building stands the Campanile of San Clemente, constructed between 1545 and 1548 based on a project by Agostino Righetto from Valdagno and belonging to the ancient demolished church; its last restoration dates back to 1985. The Cathedral of San Clemente is characterized by its imposing walls and its very high ceiling. Finally, the main altar is surmounted by an altarpiece by Giacomo Ciesa.
