The Battle of Sorio took place on April 8, 1848: the strong Austrian army faced the newly formed contingent of Vicentine crusaders. During the clashes, about fifty young volunteers lost their lives, overwhelmed by the well-trained and armed Austrian army. The administrations of Gambellara and Montebello decided in 1868 to build an obelisk on the site in memory of the fallen youth.
The monument was designed by architect Antonio Caregaro Negrin, located in the territory of Montebello, but in an area adjacent to the territory of Sorio in Gambellara, to the extent that it appears on the Gambellara coat of arms. In 1907 the obelisk was restored and to this day, tourists can stop there, perhaps on foot or by mountain bike, enjoying the beautiful vineyard-covered hills of the surroundings.
