Chiesa di San Pietro Martire

Via Sant'Alessio, 34 , Verona - 37129

The little deconsecrated church of San Giorgetto dei Domenicani was built between the end of the 13th century and the beginning of the 14th.

It was named San Pietro Martire's in 1424, when it was given to the namesake confraternity, followed in 1494 by Salerni family, who took over.

In 1807, after Napoleon's oppressions, it became property of Verona's Cityhall and given the parish of Sant'Anastasia.

Very important are some samples of the 13th century's sculpures, like the funeral monument of Bavarino de' Crescenzi (1346) on the facade, and Gugliemo di Castelbarco's funerary tomb which is considered the prototype of the Scaliger tombs, on top of the arch which, between the little church and Santa Anastasia's facade was the way into the Convento dei Domenicani.

Inside, the single nave, which is divided into two spans having sailes shaped vaults, is one of the main galleries in the city showing  13th century's frescos, which are nothing less than San Zeno and Sant'Anastasia.

The painting decoration was made in later steps, but not long one from the other. The most ancient one shows a double band with vegetables subjects and a third one with eighteen coats of arms of 18 german gentlemen.

Some decades later, a new layer of plaster was made due to some works. Now, the main subject of the images is a knight on his knees presented by some Saints to the Madonna col Bambino (Mary with child) and among which is San Giorgio.

Above the altar we can see a Crucifixion,, the Adoration of the Three Kings, the Mass of San Gregorio or Bolsena's Miracle and San Giorgio with the princess, all frescos of the mid 14th century likely to be within Turone's works.

On the nothern wall, should also be contemporary the two frames with Madonna in trono col Bambino between Saints Caterina, Giorgio who presents a praying knight, Cristoforo and Pietro martyr.

On the left side of the counter facade, recently restored, we can see two frames by Bartolomeo Badile.

In 1514 Giovanni Maria Falconetto painted the upper area of the eastern wall the great allegory of the Annunciazione.
