The building that is today a news stand, in the 14th century was the church of Santa Maria della Misericordia, later renamed in the 16th century "Santa Maria al Lago" due to the presence of a lake nearby. Its peculiarity was that it had an attached public hospital to host those who needed assistance for very short periods.
