Giuseppe Garibaldi (Nice, 4th July 1807 – Caprera, 2nd June 1882) was one of the most representative heroes of Risorgimento. He was the leader of the Expedition of the Thousands, who left from Quarto (near Genoa) to the conquest of Sicily and South Italy. It was also called the “hero of the two worlds” for his revolutionary activity in South America.
The bronze sculpture represents Garibaldi on a horse’s back, and it stands on a marble plinth. The statue was made by the sculptor Pietro Bordini, born in Verona in 1856, and it was inaugurated on 15th May 1887. The monument is in good conditions, but the marble basement needs cleaning. In 2011 the statue has been victim of vandalism and his head has been covered with a black plastic bag.
