Chiesetta di San Marcello

Chiesetta di San Marcello

Montorso Vicentino - 36050

The church of San Marcello is situated on the hill of Bellimadore, in the area of Ponte Cocco. Built by the community in the 15th-16th century, it has the typical structure of churches built after the year 1000: a rectangular plan and a rather low roof. The current belfry, of more recent origin, stands on the foundations of an older bell tower. Inside, there is a wooden statue of San Marcello (the one on the altar to the right), a work from the 17th century, and two stone holy water basins (on either side of the door) from several centuries ago. For years, the small church has been a destination for pilgrimages from the valley below and for warm celebrations in the external yard.

Curiosity: In the church, until the 1950s, Mass was celebrated every Sunday. Meanwhile, the bells were rung by hand and served to notify farmers that it was time for lunch or dinner. The special commemorations of S. Marcello (January 16) and Sant'Anna (July 26) represented an additional occasion for celebration.
