To rediscover in the course of time the daily life of the most remote human communities, with ancient and ever present emotions, needs and aspirations.
This is one of the aims of the National Archaeological Museum of Verona, inaugurated in February 2022 in the former Habsburg barracks of San Tomaso, overlooking the Adige River.
The structure, which in the past was used as a court and a military prison, was built by the Austrian administration when political events following the Carbonari riots necessitated the detention of an increasing number of people. The complex consists of three buildings, organized around an internal courtyard, and has three floors and an attic.
The museum hosts materials from the most significant recent excavations of the territory of Verona, within a path that is divided into a series of subsections, dealing with the main historical epochs of the Verona area from the Paleolithic, represented by the famous painted stone, known as the "Sciamano", coming from Fumane Cave, passing through the Neolithic and the Copper Age, up to the Bronze and the Iron Age.
A new section dedicated to the Roman Era is under construction and will be inaugurated in 2024.
