Along the city’s waterways, we will listen to stories from the past, tales of old trades, artisan guilds, mills, and commerce, in a brief yet intense journey filled with emotions, where the past intertwines with the vibrant daily life and the hustle and bustle of young people that animate the university district.
The Contarine Gates represent the most significant hydraulic structure in the city and are located at the point where the Internal Naviglio used to flow into the Main Branch of the Bacchiglione, a mandatory crossing point for boats leaving the city to head toward Venice.
The route runs alongside the Venetian bastioned walls, amidst walls, bastions, and floodplain areas, traversing the Borgo Portello with its monumental gate, a solemn and refined entrance to the city and an ancient river port.
One then leaves the walled city behind and continues along a stretch of the straightened Piovego, an ancient trade route connecting Padua and Venice, until reaching the mouth of the Canal of San Gregorio. The journey then proceeds toward the Conca di Voltabarozzo, and finally reaches the Scaricatore Canal, whose construction between the late 19th and early 20th centuries forever altered the identity and appearance of the old water city, culminating at Bassanello.
