The first evidence of the church dates back to 1362, but its origins are shrouded in mystery. What is certain is that during restoration and consolidation work on the path, remains of a wall and medieval ceramics were found. The characteristics of the wall suggest a building from a period earlier than the church, for purposes of refuge and defense, as there was a military watchtower in the locality of Castelle, just above the church.
