Chiesa San Francesco

Via B. L. Guanella , Fratta Polesine - 45025

Existing since the beginning of the 16th century, the church, originally dedicated to S. Maria Assunta, constitutes an extension of a previous church dating back to the early 1100s.

It was the seat of the Brotherhood of the White Flagellants, so called because they wore a white fabric cloak with a hood lowered over their faces, and a privileged place for the meetings of the Rosary Brotherhood and the Cord of St. Francis. The Minor Friars of the Province of St. Anthony of Padua managed this structure, which they dedicated to St. Francis, from 1501 until September 17, 1656, the year in which the convent was suppressed by the Most Serene Republic.

In a crypt under the right altar, the remains of the scholar, mathematician, and writer Cav. Giovanni Maria Bonardo are preserved, who lived in Fratta in the second half of the 1500s and founded the Accademia dei Pastori Frattegiani.

Among the valuable works contained within, the beautiful and artistic central wooden altar, attributed to the rodigino Caracchio, and the altarpiece of the Assumption in the center of the altar, attributed to Maffei, are worth mentioning.

Open by the Pro Loco: Saturday afternoon from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Sunday morning from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
