The Bridge
Built in 1780/81 of fired clay, by the master builder Pietro Rosin from Palmanova, as a replacement for the wooden drawbridge.
The estimated cost of 18,500 Venetian lire was not sufficient. The Municipality requested a loan from the School of San Rocco. Over 600 oak piles from the Comugna forest were used for the foundations. On the pillar to the right, it reads: “The Community of Portobuffolè built the bridge in stone with public funds, which was previously made of wood, under the podestà Simeone Barbaro and Francesco Giustinian. Year of our Lord 1783”.
On the left, below the coat of arms: “The commissioners Giovanni Conte Cesana, Pietro Arrigoni and Girolamo Rota”. Flanking the bridge, with two large arches, are six elegant balconies.
The Gate
Torresin - Remains of another tower. Above the arch, inside the castle, a dark stone coat of arms and a plaque with the inscription: “Year 1689 of the birth of the Lord”.
Inside the arch, remnants of the coats of arms of Venetian podestà. To the left, an opening, now bricked up, where the toll was paid. Marks of the hinges of the ancient door, the keys of which are in the historical museum of Udine. On the outside, an imposing facade, above the arch a majestic Lion of St. Mark with an inscription of a revolutionary French flavor: “Rights and duties of man and the citizen”; The phrase is undoubtedly a shrewd popular initiative to avoid unpleasant surprises from the invading French army. Next to it, on the remains of ancient walls, the so-called Mouth of Truth.
