Tomba Brion, located near the cemetery of Altivole, is not only the burial of a family, but thanks to the architect Carlo Scarpa it has become an inner journey that each of us can make on every visit.
The tomb is dedicated to the Brion family, and in particular to the spouses Onorina and Giuseppe Brion, founders of the Brionvega industry that produced objects that have made the history of Italian design.
The works began in 1969. The Brion cemetery committed Scarpa for two decades and was closely followed by him in its construction; "it is the work that I visit most willingly because in my other works I see only errors and defects" he said. Unfortunately, due to Scarpa's death in Sendai, the work remained unfinished.
The intention underlying the concept of the cemetery is to tell the human adventure of the love of two spouses with the forms of the architecture and the surrounding landscape.
The cimetery is enclosed towards the outside by a surrounding wall inclined at 60 ° respect to the horizon line; inside there are 5 buildings, as we can admire them today: a long building at the entrance from the town cemetery (the propylaea); to his right, a pool of water with a small pavilion; to the left, an arch / bridge with the tombs of the Brion couple, to the north a small chapel and lastly, a cubic-shaped church.
According to Guido Pietropoli, a pupil of Carlo Scarpa, the ways that can be done inside this cemetery are paths for meditation.
