Piazza Castello

Piazza Castello , Marostica VI - 36063

From a simple unpaved space in the Venetian era (1404-1797), now the square presents itself as a large space in stone slightly elevatedwith the large chessboard in the centre, south of which you can admire the Scaliger coat of arms Scaliger with marbles inlaid.

It is the beating heart of the socio-economic life of the city, animated by the Tuesday market. It preserves evidence that symbolically refers to the Venetian Marostica (1404-1797): to the north-east the column in memory of the loyalty of the Marosticans to Venice during the war of the League of Cambrai (1508-1510), on top of which stands the Marcian lion.

To the west another column with a flagpole that in the past has supported the banner of the Serenissima and on which now waves the Italian tricolor. Two lions in bas-relief look at the square: one on the north facade of the Lower Castle and one on the facade of the Doglione.

Once located in the northern part of the square was the fifteenth-century fountain, which was howeer demolished. Worthy of interest is also the well in white stone.
