Raised on the top of the Pausolino hill, it communicates with the Lower Castle and dominates the walled city.
Built on a previous tower, which is documented in thirteenth-century documents, it most likely dates back to the Lordship of Cansignorio della Scala (1340-1375), a great builder of Scaliger defensive works.
This building originally had a powerful structure, now largely ruined, with four corner towers and a high keep, of which some wall fragments remain, as well as for a good part of the enclosure on the south side.
