The construction of the circle of walls (about 1700-1800 meters) that surround the hill Pausolino in a harmonious unity and the plain below began on 1 March 1372, during the age of Cansignorio della Scala (1359-1375).
The walls, all crenellated and provided with patrol walkways, are interspersed with 24 turrets, on three of which the three robust doors have been obtained: Vicentina, Bassanese and Breganzina, looking respectively south, east and west and are all equipped with a barbican called "rivellino".
Another gate, Tramontana, located to the north has been created along the last eastern part of the walls and gives access to the road that leads to the actual entrance of the Upper Castle. A moat and drawbridges at the gates further strengthened the defensive structure of Marostica, a Scaliger outpost bordering with Bassano, which was then part of the Carraresi, lords of Padua. As Marin Sanudo testimonies (Venetian author of the fifteenth century) the raising of the walls involved a work of three years and was completed in 1375.
