The building, in Latin cross shape, is one of the most important in the province of Rovigo. The interior, harmoniously in the style of the 18th century, is adorned with frescoes by Francesco Zugno, a pupil of G.B. Tiepolo, and refined carving works carried out by the lendinarese Luigi Voltolini to decorate the pulpit, the organ's choir, and the parapet of the altar of the Saints Forty Martyrs; noteworthy for the sophistication of the decorations are also the baldachin above the main altar, attributed to Sante Baseggio and the wooden sculptures of the sacristy by the Belluno carver Andrea Brustolon. In addition to the frescoes on the ceiling of the central nave, depicting The Apotheosis of Saints Peter and Paul, The Delivery of the Keys and The Beheading of St. John the Baptist, also interesting are the Stations of the Cross, probably by the same Zugno, which were recently stolen and replaced with others by a local author, the Birth of Jesus and the Adoration of the Magi by Mattia Bortoloni, the Circumcision by Ippolito Scarsella, the Altarpiece of St. Nicholas of Bari by G.B. Buratto, the Ecstasy of St. Anthony by Pietro Liberi, and the Altarpiece of the Saints Forty Martyrs by an unknown Ferrarese author. The side aisles are adorned with marble statues of St. Alexius and St. Giuliana Falconieri (1783) by Giovanni Marchiori, St. Benedict and St. Scholastica by Giovanni M. Morlaiter: two large cherubs surmount the main altar and are the work of P. Baratta and Marino Groppelli. All the statues on the walls around the church, except for that of St. John Bosco, are finally by Tommaso Bonazza.
