The entrance to Buso della Rana is from Contrà Maddalena, along the road that leads from Monte di Malo towards the village of Priabona.
Until 2011, it was considered one of the largest caves in Italy with a single entrance, but recently, passionate speleologists have created a connection with another nearby cave called Pisatela, thus losing this title, but inheriting 15 km of new galleries.
The entrance, accessible to anyone, is majestic, and the temperature at this point is constant throughout the year: about 13/15 °C.
The interior is very interesting, but to visit it, it is essential to be well-equipped and accompanied by expert speleologists.
Inside the cave, a true maze, there are tunnels and small lakes that can be dangerous for inexperienced people, especially since some points can quickly flood in bad weather, making it impossible to exit.
At Buso della Rana, speleological and naturalistic excursions are organized, traversing the narrow siphon and the Laghetto di Caronte using a rubber boat.
Workshops for schools are also organized to convey scientific content related to nature and the environment.
The first exploration was carried out by local inhabitants in 1887. Later, various branches were explored. If one does not undertake ascents in the ascending branches (Ramo dei Salti, Ramo Giacomelli, etc.), no special equipment is required. Other branches (Nero, Nord, Verde, Fossile Sx), however, present one or two jumps slightly over 5 meters that require complete equipment to follow.
