The project "Water, Iron, and Fire" aims to rediscover and enhance the culture and landscape of the Astico and Posina valleys.
This itinerary tells some important aspects of the history, development, traditions, and paths, and the narrative unfolds through the elements that have most characterized these valleys.
The water, a source of life and an essential economic resource that has powered mills, sawmills, paper mills, and hammers, and today also hydropower plants. The iron, forged in ancient times and still worked today in the important metallurgical industry settlements in the valley. The fire, fueled by the coals from the woods, which allowed the melting, forging, and movement of locomotives that brought goods and tourists to Arsiero, but also transported refugees, supplies, and soldiers, when the noisy fire of the Great War spread its tragic echo in this border territory.
The project has restored two nail factories in Costamala in the Fusine district, where the production of nails took place.
Together with the restoration of the forges, a 4.5 km loop trail has been enhanced, which, starting from the Posina pond, winds along paths and roads that allow immersion in the typical rural landscape characterized by hamlets, terraces, woods, and cultivated slopes where ironworking was an essential element for the local economy.
