The first part of the route winds through a dense forest, which gradually opens up to the wonderful Val Fontana d’Oro, wide and airy, bordered on both sides by imposing rocky walls. One ascends through several very steep hairpin bends on this path, leaving behind the majestic Campanile di Val Fontana d’Oro.
After a substantial hour of climbing, one enters a small grove, from which there is a panoramic view of the above Strada delle 52 Gallerie.
One ascends through the Boale Rosso, which had been eroded for years, making the entire path impracticable. After the repairs, it is now possible to continue along the gully, entering the last steep grassy slope that leads from Val Fontana d’Oro to the Strada delle 52 Gallerie.
From there, one can choose to continue towards Rifugio Papa or head along the ridge for the final part of the via ferrata of the Cinque Cime.
Historical note: this path is one of the oldest in Pasubio, made passable 100 years ago during the First World War by the Aosta Battalion.
How to get there:
Driving to Passo Pian delle Fugazze, proceed to Ponte Verde. At that point, turn right onto the road leading to Passo Xomo. 200 meters after the turn, park the car and walk left onto the dirt road that is located after the sharp left curve. Continue on foot for about 400 meters on the dirt road, then turn right at the indication of the CAI signs marking the start of the Val Fontana d’Oro path (number 322).
