The name derives from the fact that on the rocky wall there are plaques honoring the 15 Gold Medals for Military Valor who fought on Pasubio during the Great War.
By extension, the term Road of the Heroes refers to the entire road of Val di Fieno, which ascends from Pian delle Fugazze (1162m), at the border between the provinces of Vicenza and Trento, and arrives at Rifugio Papa (1928m). The road is closed to motorized traffic, is 10.6 km long in total, marked by milestones that indicate the distance from the start every kilometer.
The surface is natural, except for some asphalted hairpin bends with a winding route in Val di Fieno to ascent with a rather constant incline that is never particularly challenging except for the final stretch before the Galleria d’Havet, which is only a few dozen meters long.
During the world conflict, it was merely a path and was later widened to allow comfortable access to the Sacred Area, as an alternative to the road of Scarubbi, where the snow remains much longer due to its northern exposure.
Closed to motorized traffic in the 1980s due to the dangerousness of the route, especially in the final stretch, it is now very frequented by hikers both on foot and by mountain bike. It remains one of the main access routes to the summit of Pasubio, ending at Rifugio Papa (1928 meters).
How to get there:
Go to Passo Pian delle Fugazze, parking the car in one of the available parking lots. The Road of the Heroes starts, well signposted, next to the SP46.
