Castel San Zeno - Museo Civico "A. Giacomelli"

The civic museum is housed in some rooms of the Castle of San Zeno, the oldest part of the city fortifications. The visit to the museum spaces is always guided, and it is possible to enter the evocative court of arms of the castle and the exhibition rooms, which retrace the historical memory of Montagnana.

The first two rooms house pre-Roman and Roman founds, mainly from necropolis. Among all the majestic stele of Postumulena Sabina stands out, a huge and elegantly decorated tombstone.

The two rooms on the second floor are dedicated to the medieval and modern times, and mainly preserve ceramic objects from the castle itself and from all over the city. There is also a small art gallery: among the works preserved here, two detached fourteenth-century frescoes that were discovered in the courtyard of the castle and a large map of the territory in parchment paper made in the sixteenth century.

Montagnana has also the honor to be the hometown of two tenors, who were born at the end of the 19th century and who have established themselves internationally. Giovanni Martinelli trod the scenes of the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, while Aureliano Pertile was the favorite of Arturo Toscanini at the Scala in Milan. The last room of the museum is dedicated to them.
