Cattedrale di San Pietro Apostolo

Piazza Duomo, 1 , Treviso TV - 31100

The Treviso Cathedral is dedicated to Saint Peter. With its characteristic seven domes, it is the result of a fusion of epochs and styles. In the area, it seems there was a Christian settlement in the first half of the 4th century. The dilapidated church was rebuilt from 1760 in the current Neo-Renaissance forms, designed by Giordano Riccati. The facade was completed in 1836 by Francesco Bomben and Gaspare Petrovich.

Inside, the central nave is covered by three domes. Among the windows of the central dome are four niches painted at the end of the 18th century by Giovan Battista Canal depicting the saints of the city: Pope Benedict XI, Blessed Henry of Bolzano, Saint Liberale, and Saint Teonisto. Noteworthy is the Vestibule of the Annunciation, which hosts numerous works by Treviso painters: the Assumption of Mary by Domenico Capriolo (1521); the Madonna of the Flower (1487) by Girolamo da Treviso; Saint Lawrence and Saints (1562) and the Adoration of the Shepherds (circa 1557), both by Paris Bordon; and the Appearance of Christ (Amalteo Pomponio, 1564). The tomb of Bishop Castellano Salomone (1322) is a remarkable Venetian work. The gem is the Malchiostro Chapel, which houses the Annunciation, a masterpiece by Titian (1521-23). Another element not to be missed is the crypt, built in the mid-11th century with subsequent interventions. In the apse is the Ark of Saint Liberale, the patron saint of Treviso. The Main Chapel, erected according to the design of Pietro Lombardo in 1488, is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. The altar consists of the Sarcophagus of Blessed Henry of Bolzano.

Outside, behind the baptistery, rises the bell tower from the 13th century. At the base, in a niche, there is a ruined fresco by Titian.
