The civic tower, which also serves as a belfry, was built between 1640 and 1655 based on a project traditionally attributed to the famous Renaissance architect Sebastiano Serlio (Bologna, circa September 6, 1475 – Fontainebleau, circa 1554).
The tower is located in the heart of the city like a "sentinel" between Piazza Duomo and Piazza Chilesotti: the underpass runs through the base of the belfry via two large arches, connecting the two squares and acting as a hinge between the two spaces.
The architectural lines of the tower are particularly elegant and slender, while at the top of the tower there is an octagonal lantern topped by a bulb, on which a large statue of Saint John the Baptist (June 24), the patron saint of Thiene, is placed to protect the city.
The square is dedicated to Giacomo Chilesotti, a partisan from Thiene and a gold medal for military valor.
It is characterized by the presence of the Monument to the Fallen, inaugurated in 1926, recognizable by the colorful mosaics that decorate its façade and by the sixteenth-century palace of the noble Macchiavelli with a façade decorated with red and white diamonds.
In the center of the square is the fountain from 1814, which every year, during Easter time, is decorated with a dove carrying an olive branch in its beak.
