It rises on the area once occupied by the ancient Church of Santa Giustina, demolished in the 19th century to make way for a new urban layout. Today it is one of the most frequented public spaces in the city, a meeting point between the historic center and the main shopping streets.
At the center of the square stands the equestrian monument dedicated to Giuseppe Garibaldi, created in 1896 by the sculptor Ettore Ferrari. The bronze statue depicts the hero of the two worlds with a proud demeanor, symbolizing the Risorgimento values and Rovigo's active role in a united Italy.
The square is bordered by significant buildings, such as the Chamber of Commerce Palace and the prestigious Teatro Sociale, the true cultural heart of the city.
