Porta Altinia

Largo Porta Altinia , Treviso - 31100

Porta Altinia is one of the three gates built in the 16th century, the only one remaining from the medieval walls and incorporated into the 16th-century ones.
The name “Altinia” derives from Altinio, the important Roman city towards which it was oriented. From here, in fact, until the fall of the Serenissima Republic, all goods to and from Venice that did not follow the river route of the Sile passed through. Located close to the castle of San Marco, with which it communicated through an internal staircase, it also served a defensive function.
The restorations that followed the bombings of World War II restored it to its original appearance. The exterior façade is rich in bas-reliefs in Istrian stone, including that of the Lion of San Marco.
