Villa Contarini dei Leoni

Strolling through Mira

An expert guide of the history of the area will take you on a historical walk to discover Mira!

Itinerary: I Tagli della Mira, Villa dei Leoni (exterior), Mira Porte, Old and New sluice gates.

The itinerary tells Mira from two different points of view: the historical and artistic one by retracing the history of Villa Contarini dei Leoni, and the environmental one with the hydraulic transformations that took place in Mira starting from the late 16th century with the “Tagli”, “Cuts” along the Brenta river.
Two interesting readings of Mira's history that reveal how much the locality was an integral part of the history of the Republic of Venice. The Cuts of the Mirano and Nuovissimo Canals, the preservation of the Venice Lagoon, and the state-of-the-art techniques for their execution are some of the aspects related to Mira's history that will be recounted. The walk will continue with stories related to Villa dei Leoni, the visit of the King of France, marzocchi, obelisks, and the extraordinary story of Giambattista Tiepolo's frescoes.
The itinerary will end in the small village of Mira Porte, with a visit to the old and new sluice gates, fulcrum of a river trade now alive only in views of the past.
