The Montagnola is a hill that rises above the locality of “Settolo Basso”, on the left bank of the Piave River, along the foothill stretch of the municipality of Valdobbiadene. The Montagnola has witnessed a sad yet important page of history: it was occupied during World War I by Austro-Hungarian troops, who built defensive works throughout the territory and particularly on this strategically important height, both for its location and morphological characteristics. It is here that a handful of Alpini managed to break through the enemy lines, opening a vital breach for the Italian army. The site has been recently restored and is open to visitors, with its trenches and descriptive installations that recount the wartime events related to the place. The Montagnola can be reached on foot from the center of Valdobbiadene through a route immersed in the greenery of the hills and the silence of ancient villages.
