The Chioggia Library was established in 1868 when the Municipality acquired the collection of the suppressed convent of the Filipinos.
The original collection was increased through purchases made by the Municipality and private donations, including 4,000 volumes gifted by Angelo Gaetano Chiozzotto in 1878 and the bequests from Giandomenico Nardo and Domenico Andrea Renier. In 1941, the Library moved to the premises in Piazzetta XX Settembre, near the current Command of the Urban Police, and in 1964 it was set up in the "Ex Monte di Pietà." Since 1997, the headquarters is in Ca' di Dio. This building, known as the Ca' di Dio Hospital or San Salvatore outside the city gate, has been documented since the 13th century. Destroyed during the war of Chioggia, it was rebuilt in 1396.
In 1585 it was ceded to the Cappuccino Fathers for them to build their convent; in 1806 it was converted into a barracks by order of Napoleon and remained so until the end of the 19th century, undergoing various adaptations.
In 1911 it became a retirement home for elderly women. Restored in 1988, it housed the state middle school "G. Zarlino" and finally, in 1997, the municipal library.
